Google Pagerank is the end almost near?

Well if the changes made by Google this week is any sign to come the endo of pagerank may be near. Google made changes this week removing the pagerank status from webmaster tools. In an officila statement from Google the following quote was made.

“We’ve been telling people for a long time that they shouldn’t focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it’s the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true. We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it. :-)”

Matt Cutts the well known head of webspam at Google made this short statement on a webmaster blog recently.

“Personally, I wouldn’t mind removing the PageRank in the Google Toolbar or swapping it with some other indicator, but that would be a large undertaking. Maybe that can be a long-term goal for me. :) ”

Webmasters and SEO’s have been saying for years that Google Pagerank is irrelevant. A major misunderstanding that many newbies have is that Pagerank is what you need to chase so to speak. The truth is that pagerank is only a measure of links and not rellevancy. Pagerank has nothing to do with on page factors such as content. In fact with enogh high pr links a page with little to nothing on it can gain good pagerank. Does this make this page valuable? No it does not.
Google started cracking down on this when it started punishing people for buying or selling links. The misunderstanding here is that Google has never said you can’t buy links. What Google has said is that you can’t buy links to influence pagerank.

Many believe that Google is starting to see that Pagerank abuse is getting out of hand. Inncoent webmasters who do not know the truth still believe that pagerank is the most important factor in SEO. The people making money off pagerank also know this and continue to use this tool. to make money.

The fact is that times are changing, people are getting more informed and over the past few years Google is starting to really crack down. If you want to take the risk of building a site based on pagerank then do it. Just be prepared when Google decides to pull the plug.
