When we talk about future proofing our SEO strategies we are really trying to look into a crystal ball in a sense and predict what changes will happen when it comes to search engine optimization, however we can also look at the past and see look at what has changed and what has not. What we find when we do this is that most aspects of search engine optimization have not really changed that much. For example in 1999 the important things you needed to do with your website to rank were to have Unique valuable content and build quality links. This has not changed and is still and more then likely be very important in the future.
Now let’s look at 3 key aspects of SEO strategy and break them down into our topic which is to SEO proof your site for the future.
1) Technical
When we talk about technical aspects of SEO what we are talking about is certain aspects that we do generally from an optimization standpoint.
Link Building- Link building as we know is very important to SEO and ranking. We seek good quality one way links to help our sites in the serps. However equally important is our internal linking structure. Internal linking Is very important and should be very user friendly. Our sites should be easy to navigate. Remember if it is easy for you to navigate then it is easy for search engines to navigate.
Sitemaps- Sitemaps help search engines determine what to crawl. However sitemaps can also be of benefit to your users. This is why it is important to have an XML sitemap for search engines and an html sitemap for users ( search engines also use the html sitemap to an extent)
Alt Text on Images- Many webmasters and SEO optimizers skip this step for one reason or another. This is not a good idea as Alt text on images is yet another way to add more content to you page. Remember content is king, well here is an easy way to add more content to our page and should always be used.
Meta Tags- Even though search engines do not use meta tags as they once did it it important to point out that the title tag is ver valuable and should be targeted with your top keyword’s for the page. The Description tag is also important, others will argue this fact but let me point out that many times Google in particular will use the description tag as a reference when describing your site in the serps. You want to utilise this tag to show potential users your headline or a sales pitch so to speak.
2) Content
Unique and valuable content is the most important aspect in ranking your page for without it you might as well hang it up.
Unique content- When we speak of unique content we are talking about something compelling that makes your page different then all of the others. You want to write in a way that makes your content exciting and link worthy. In other words you want something that others will link to you giving you that valuable on way link.
Efficient - You want good quality content but you also want to make it efficient and to the point. The last thing you want is for someone to get bored with your page. Make it compelling, interesting and to the point.
Clean Urls – Finally let’s look at your url structure. making your url’s clean and short help search engines as well as makes your site look professional, for example if your page is about leather shoes the url that is labeled leathershoes.html compared to leather_shoes_page_x_1005.html is much cleaner and easier to index.
Marketing
Marketing your website is a constant battle and you need to stay on top of new ways of marketing or you will get lost in the shuffle.
Social Media - One of the fastest growing trends today is social media. With sites such as Twitterand Facebook becoming so popular among users you absolutely need to utilise social media marketing or you are losing big time. Recently we made a post about getting mass followers on Twitter .
Email Marketing – Email marketing is as important today as it ever has been. Keeping your site fresh in peoples minds keeps them coming back. Remember if you are not using email marketing chances are your competitors are.
External Link Attraction – This goes back to content creation however it is important to note that you want to attract links to your page. Let me repeat again compelling content will attract natural one way links to your page which is exactly what Goggle and other search engines love.
